What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), previously named the Clean Heat Grant is a Government incentive aimed to help fund the transition from fossil fuel heating to low carbon alternatives, such as Air Source Heat Pumps. It is a £7,500 upfront payment in the form of a voucher and is available across England and Wales.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme opened for applications on the 23rd May 2022. The scheme has since been extended for another 3 years, meaning that applications will be open until 2028. The payment has also been increased from £5,000 to £7,500 from 23rd October 2023.

Am I eligible to claim?

For Air Source Heat Pump installations, vouchers will be valid for three months only and if the voucher is not redeemed in this time then a new application must be made. Consent must be given by the homeowner within 14 days of application.

All properties must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) dated within 10 years to be eligible and if there are any recommended measures for cavity wall or loft insulation then these works must be completed.

Self-build properties are eligible for the scheme and do not require an EPC, however some documentation must be provided to evidence that the property is a self-build.

Properties are only eligible if they are replacing an existing fossil fuel or non-renewable electric system. Hybrid heat pumps are not eligible as the heat pump must be able to cover 100% of the heat loss of the property.

Who manages the scheme?

BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) are the owners of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, however the scheme is being administered by Ofgem.
